As far as I can remember going to clubs, I was often more attracted by the visuals projected on the back the DJ than the music they were playing. Either being a stroboscopic sequence of images or a fluid transformation of shapes merging into each other, it is alway a good medium to let your imagination travel.
I remember being mesmerised by the vivid colours of the liquid manipulations of Akiko Nakayama in Tokyo, trying to understand how Jack Featherstone produced the grainy textures which illustrate the song Renata from James Holden. Since I do not know any generative software, the question has always been how to produce such a long video. When Léonard Lampion contacted me to illustrate one track of his new album, he was open to any idea. The work started as a careful listening of the album and an exchange in depth of our point of view on several desires. The song called Sirène, which both means siren and mermaid, caught my attention because of its simplicity and recurrence. This summer, during my vacations cycling in the middle of France with some friends, we decided to spend the night right next to a sluice. After setting up the camp we started fishing and that's when I noticed that the surface of the water was continuously undulating on the edge of the little dam. Since I could walk on the edge I started filming the reflection of the the surroundings, trying to enhance the ever-changing landscape by moving the camera into space. Therefore the video clip is primarily a choreography; the evolution of the position of the lens generates an unique sequence-shot. Considering the amount of informations, I edited the video in a black and white and increased the contrast to give a bit of depth. The collage of a circle in the middle of the frame gives a focal point on which to concentrate, a perspective which drags you to another world, probably hiding the mermaid that you were looking for. Finally I added digital flecks, pink geometrical forms counterbalancing the crisp aspect of the water surface. Here is the first attempt I produced almost ten years ago after seeing Sous le ciel de Paris, a skateboard video directed Neels Castillon, and Öctagon trailer. PROMENADE DU JOUR: SIRÈNE
